Whistle is pleased to present Fill-in, a group exhibition by Dimz, dpgp78.
Visual shapes with multiple meanings allow flexible conversations. Fill-in lists the work of Dimz and the collective dpgp78 (kim jihwan, minsungsig) based on representations1 accumulated over many years. The medium and methods of these artists may be contrasting. However, various factors indicating a specific situation in each frame are in common. They also cross paths in simultaneously engaging in graffiti, music, and tattoo.
Dimz has been invested in graffiti such as Throw up2 and Tagging3 since 2004, gradually establishing several styles over the years. Since Dimz started tattooing in 2011, he has repeatedly painted representations containing animals, plants, and characters. The artist divides and fills the wooden panel with spray and acrylic paint in distinct colours and textures, then adds specific images with markers and oil pastels. The 11 small squares on display embody the artist's experience and identity. As in Alleyway (2022) and Going out crazy (2022), his paintings reflect the attitude of finding and observing gaps in the city.
dpgp78 is a collective of kim jihwan and minsungsig, who share and work on each other's drawings. Both also operate as tattooists and musicians. Since 2019, they have been collaborating on publications and pop-up4 projects. The act of drawing together is carefree, like a sort of play or an improvisation. Stacked in layers are different shades of blacks in markers, pencils, pens, and Conte crayons in the 18 'Coming soonings' series, suggestive of doodles and cartoons. Representations of the two artists are reproduced or rearranged on different canvases to form an extended relationship.
