The labor-intensive process of Kränzlein belies the simplicity and clarity of his finished work. Although carved from metamorphic and sedimentary rock, Kränzlein’s sculptures are characterized by a remarkable lightness, a testament to the artist’s conquest over his medium’s severity.
Through repetition and variation of carving method, the materials’ inherent imperfections are transformed into compelling patterns and structures that encourage the viewer to interact with the sculpture from different angles, to perceive new dimensions based on one’s position in relation to the work.
