Eduardo Coimbra (b. 1955, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. Studied electrical engineering and art history at PUC-Rio de Janeiro. Coimbra is best known for his site-specific, mixed-media architectural installations. '[My] work is related to space in a broader sense, many times forcing the spatial boundaries between interiors and exteriors, blurring the limits between the concepts of art, architecture and landscape'. He has said: 'my main interest is to provoke people right where they live, where they move.' Often Coimbra invites the public to participate in works directly. For example in his 2011 work at Museu de Arte da Pampulha—Landscape’s Nature—, visitors are welcome to walk on fields of grass composed of large areas with the edges' lines dissolved into small individual pots of grass. The vegetation and landscape of the exterior of the museum executed by Roberto Burle-Marx in the 1940s is carried into the interior space of the Oscar Neimeyer designed museum. In other works, the 'Sculptures' series, several cubes of 3 different sizes (1/2 meter, 1 meter and 2 meters), are paired and stacked so as to form spaces and pathways to the experience of visitors. The faces of the cubes are black, white or striped in black and white creating a visual dynamism that problematises the perception of distances and depths. Nuvem is a sculpture composed of image and light. It is a group of five double-sided square light boxes, with 4.7 m width and height, and 50 cm thick. The lateral faces are covered by mirrors subtracting the volume and weight of the boxes. In the centre of the square faces there is the sequential photographic register of a cloud expansion. As a whole the 5 parallel boxes set creates a bright cocoon suggesting the volume of a cloud that may be crossed by visitors. This sculpture has a scale that deals with the architectural environment around it and it becomes a prominent element in the landscape. Throughout the artist's career the proximity with the architecture in the project of liveable spaces and the researches for record, concept and recreate the landscape, they produced photographic works, drawings, collages, installations in institutional spaces, maquettes and projects for the public space. He was featured in the 29th Bienal de São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil, 2010) and the 3rd Mercosul Biennial, in Porto Alegre (Porto Alegre, Brazil, 2001).
