Melbourne-based artist Louisa Bufardeci has recently become fascinated with string theory, a mathematical formula being developed by theoretical physicists who are attempting to explain the workings of the universe. Their aim is to harmonise the general theory of relativity, which describes the effect of gravity on large bodies, using existing knowledge of the behaviour of particles at the atomic and subatomic scales. For APT7, Bufardeci draws on this esoteric branch of physics, making poetic experiments with form and perception in large-scale wall drawings and intimate woven sculptures. While it may not be possible for Bufardeci to reveal the hidden spatial dimensions that string theory proposes, she can complicate our conventional way of seeing things, as a way of making us feel more at home with change.
