Melanesia Biography

Melanesia is a region extending from New Guinea in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, eastward to New Caledonia. It includes the four independent countries of Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, as well as New Caledonia, and the Indonesian region of Western New Guinea. The term 'Melanesia' was first used by Jules Dumont d'Urville in 1832 to denote an ethnic and geographical grouping of islands distinct from Polynesia and Micronesia. The art of Melanesia is strongly sculptural, full of colour and imagination providing a fantastical visual world of large powerful figurative representations of their ancestors.
