Pia Fries, born in 1955 in Beromünster (Switzerland), is among the most distinguished and stylistically unique painters of her generation. After studying sculpture in Lucerne and painting at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf, as a master's student of Gerhard Richter, she was appointed professor at the academies in Karlsruhe and Berlin. Since 2014, she has been a professor of painting at Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Munich. Since the 1990s, Pia Fries developed a distinct approach to painting and has shown her works in multiple international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennial, and in comprehensive solo exhibitions at the museums of Winterthur, St. Gallen, Bonn, and Karlsruhe.
