Song Dong: Sketch is one exhibition spread across two of Hong Kong’s central art venues: Duddell’s and Pace Gallery.
Song Dong: Sketch at Duddell’s pays homage to Song Dong’s early works with photography and videos of his globally renowned installations, Eating the City and Edible Penjing series, as well as ceramic sculptures.
Beginning their discovery of Song Dong’s artwork at Duddell’s, guests can view photos and videos from Eating the City, a series of miniature edible cities which he built in multiple cosmopolitan locations around the world including Beijing, Shanghai, Barcelona and London. Videos of the public devouring his miniature cities made from biscuits and sweets document the process of the public not only viewing but consuming his art, representing themes of destruction and hedonistic consumption. After a taste of Song’s earlier works at Duddell’s, continue the art food trail to Pace to view Song Dong’s more recent works, Sauce Painting, a series that uses seasoning from different parts of the world as paint to create an abstract visual representation.
A significant figure in the progression of Chinese conceptual art, Song’s work ranges from sculpture and photography to performance and video with his works conveying themes of impermanence of change and transience of human endeavour. Through Song Dong: Sketch, Duddell’s bring the pertinent subject of consumption and destruction to the art conversation in Hong Kong. Song’s work highlights the reality of relentless expansion, progressive demolishment and the permanent impact of humanity’s greed for more.
