M+ has announced the first dual-artist commission for its monumental multimedia facade.
Ink | Pulse is a collaboration between Taiwanese calligrapher Tong Yang-Tze and Hong Kong new media artist Chris Cheung, also known as h0nh1m.
Using Tong's 100-piece ink series Silent Music (2003–2010), Cheung utilises an algorithm that translates the energy, weight, and rhythm of Tong's calligraphy into something resembling blood flowing through vessels or signals moving through a nervous system.
'It reimagines ink as an introspective universe and a representation of the microcosmic ensemble of the human body, demonstrating the conceptual resonance of ink and calligraphy with spiritual life,' Cheung said.
Tong described the work as 'enchanting, striking yet delicate.'
'I hope this live, generative moving image work will empower everyone to appreciate the beauty of Chinese characters and motivate them to try out calligraphy for themselves,' she added.
Ink | Pulse will be visible across Hong Kong's Victoria harbour on evenings from 30 June to 24 September.
M+ Museum Director Suhanya Raffel said the work 'allows us to contemplate the imaginative possibilities of ink and new media, reinforcing M+'s role in enhancing cross-disciplinary artistic dialogues.' —[O]
