The nominees are: Vancouver-based ceramic artist Judy Chartrand (Pacific); Toronto-based artist June Clark (Ontario); New Brunswick artist Mathieu Léger (Atlantic); textile artist and spoken-word poet Taqralik Partridge (Circumpolar); a Métis filmmaker Rhayne Vermette (Prairies), and Montréal-based artist Nico Williams, ᐅᑌᒥᐣ (Québec).
Works by the six artists will be shown at the National Gallery of Canada from 4 October 2024 to 16 March 2025. The winner will be announced on 9 November 2024.
This year marks the first time the prize was overseen by an independent jury consisting of six Canadian artists, who were previously awarded or finalisted for the Award, and an international juror.
'This is a momentous year as our partners at the NGC have worked with an artist-led jury to recognise the work of homegrown artists from six regions across Canada,' said Bernard Doucet, executive director of Sobey Art Foundation.
Past winners of the Sobey Art Award include Jeremy Shaw (2016), Stephanie Comilang (2019), and Divya Mehra (2022), who were also members of the 2024 Sobey Art Award jury. Kapwani Kiwanga, who is representing Canada at the 60th Venice Biennale, was the winner of the Sobey Art Award in 2018.
