New York gallery Fort Gansevoort has brought the artist alongside Kaylene Whiskey and Tiger Yaltangki—fellow members of the art collective, Iwantja Arts—to the U.S. art scene this summer with a well-received group exhibition.
Namatjira spoke with Ocula Magazine about his powerful portraits that seek to balance humour with the complexities of colonial history. 'There's definitely humour in my work, but there's also a serious side to my paintings—I want to shed light on some untold or overlooked Indigenous stories.
