'Store in a Cool Dry Place,' delves into the culture surrounding food in Africa and its relationship to the continent's culture and heritage. One of the defining characteristics of African food culture is its incredible diversity. With over 54 countries and a multitude of ethnic groups, Africa boasts a wide
range of culinary traditions, each with its own distinct flavours, ingredients, and cooking methods. This diversity is a reflection of the rich tapestry of
African heritage, blending indigenous traditions, colonial legacies, and global influences.
Food culture in Africa holds immense significance as a source of pride and celebration for communities. It is a way for people to showcase their uniqueness and individuality to the world. Muoh explores the nostalgia associated with food brands and how they become deeply intertwined with our culture. However, despite Africa's vast agricultural potential, the majority of foodstuffs consumed on the continent are imported. Africa has the capacity to produce and supply a significant portion of the world's food needs, yet this potential remains largely untapped.
Throughout history, the most prosperous civilisations were built on the foundation of a thriving marketplace. In this work, Muoh pays homage to
the businesspersons and entrepreneurs who form the backbone of a nation's prosperity. They are the ones who contribute to the marketplace, create jobs, and drive economic growth. However, Muoh also sheds light on the challenges faced by businesses when there is a lack of good
governance and infrastructure. Corruption, in particular, has detrimental effects, disproportionately affecting the poor and hindering overall growth
and development.
'Store in a Cool Dry Place' explores the significance of food in Africa and its connection to heritage. It pays tribute to the 'everyman' shopkeeper, who
forms the foundation for a nation's prosperity. This painting brings attention to the resilience and determination of these individuals and emphasises
the need to address corruption for the betterment of the community and the preservation of cultural heritage.
