Press Release

Galerie Chantal Crousel is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new works on paper by Wade Guyton. This is the first exhibition of lithography made by the artist.

For these unique works on paper, the artist has long worked with books, intervening on them with an inkjet printer. These are generally referred to as ‘drawings’ in his lexicon.

For this exhibition, Guyton presents lithographic works on paper produced with Steindruckerei Wolfensberger in Zurich. Ten catalogues from a 1928 exhibition of Edouard Manet were torn apart and overprinted with one of the artist’s bitmap files. Guyton is reassembling these ten groups of unique lithographs into new publications. The exhibition brings together the first two published volumes and the 121 framed lithographs from Volume II.

Thinking of a book as an exhibition and an exhibition as a book, the artist has installed the works across several rooms of the gallery space’s second floor, rue Charlot.

Wade Guyton (b. 1972, Hammond, IN) has presented work in many solo institutional exhibitions, the latest of which was a twenty-year retrospective at the Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2019). Other important solo shows have been hosted by institutions such as the Serpentine Gallery, London (2017); Museum Brandhorst, Munich (2017); Museo MADRE, Naples (2017); MAMCO, Geneva (2016); Le Consortium, Dijon & Académie Conti, Vosne-Romanée (2016); Kunsthalle Zürich (2013); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2012- 2013); Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2010); Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle (2009); Portikus in Frankfurt am Main (2008); and the Kunstverein in Hamburg (2005). He lives and works in New York.

About the Artist

Since the early 2000s, Guyton has pursued, with a notable consistency, an investigation into the condition and impact of digital image production. Guyton purposefully misuses his printer by challenging its commands and materials that exceed its design specifications. As a result, the digital work everts its inherent conflicts questioning the conditional nature of its visualization.
