This year at Frieze New York, Hauser & Wirth brings together over 20 artists in a presentation of works from the 1980s. Stop Making Sense, titled after the iconic 1984 Talking Heads concert film, engages in the politics of the body in space, exploring the period between the strict ideologies of art-making in the 1970s and the identity politics of the 1990s.
Drawing from the nonsensical, the dysfunctional, and the sublime, the artists find common ground in the tension between art and its greater environment. With a heavy focus on sculptural works, the presentation reconciles art objects at odds with the world; it forces us to consider negative space, depart from the known, and investigate the underside of human nature.
