Press Release

Jhana Millers is pleased to present a new joint exhibition, The Rose, and her Thorns with Caitlin Devoy and Hye Rim Lee.

Caitlin and Hye Rim’s lush, digitally rendered works reflect on desire, transformation, and metamorphosis.

Caitlin’s sculptural works transform everyday objects into proxy body parts, poking fun at stereotypical representations of sexuality and masculinity. Her sculptures vary in suggestiveness, from cheeky to explicit, proffered with humour. This new collection of works comprises digitally transfigured versions of everyday objects such as lipsticks, examining their social and political connotations.

These sit alongside a selection of Hye Rim’s digital print series made from her 3D animations; Rebirth; Reshaping Beauty and The Rose. The series speaks to the symbology of two opposing states to find a beauty that is found and remains in brokenness. These sophisticated works are beautifully rendered – optimising perspective, texture, and reflection.

A highlight of the exhibition is Hye Rim’s monumental 3D animation Black Rose, featuring her 3D character TOKI. Black Rose presents the artist’s personal storytelling through symbolism via the lens of TOKI’s shifting identity and spirituality. Produced in 2021, this is the first time the work has been shown in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
