Mimmo Scognamiglio Artecontemporanea presents in its spaces the third solo exhibition of Finnish artist Jenni Hiltunen. After Pretty Absence in 2013 and Glass Walls in 2017, the gallery is pleased to host Add red or not. The exhibition takes its title from Richard Shiff's essay on Joan Mitchell's art.
Hiltunen, in this exhibition, continues the reflection on image and appearance as the condition of men and women as a privileged object of investigation, but she does so by focusing more on the meaning and power of the colours staged. In his works, colours become vital spaces where the figure manages to transcend into a real experience of existence.
The experience of existence is experienced by the artist herself by identifying with her characters, with the women in her portraits. Her works become almost self-portraits where the stories she imagines, or which start from reality, stir behind the emotion of pictorial creation.
Add red or not is definitely an immersive exhibition where time seems to shrink and expand. The time contained in the artist's works carries with it life and the fluctuating emotions that the individual drags into his or her inner self. The weariness of appearance and the unexpected astonishment in the gestures, glances and movements of the women in her works are reminiscent of posing culture.
Coming from social media and the net, which increasingly pushes women and men to seek an almost surgical perfection of existence, this theme becomes a field of investigation for the artist. In this exhibition, Hiltunen intensifies the density and decisiveness of his painting, using colours that become real living spaces where the experience of life can finally begin. And it is precisely behind these seemingly tired figures that the artist gives life to new scenarios and spaces still in the making.
