Pace Gallery is pleased to present a selection of twelve small format catalogues. Dating from 1971 to 2016, this collection spans nearly 50 years of Pace publications. This display includes the exhibition catalogues of Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet, Tara Donovan, Julio González, David Hockney, Lucas Samaras, Kiki Smith, and Keith Tyson. Many of these publications feature unique stylistic components and formats, including a deck of cards, 35mm slides, postcards, gatefolds, accordion folds, and tête-bêche.
One of the earliest small format catalogues on view, Jean Dubuffet's Works on Paper (1971), was designed as a 20-page leaflet, 10 panel accordion fold, printed on unbleached paper. Jean Dubuffet's Recent Paintings (1975) was published just four years later and includes six functional slides that can be projected for to scale viewings. Lucas Samaras' Photo-Transformations (1974) also provides a to scale view; all images within the catalogue are 3 x 3 inches, the actual size of the Polaroids. Kiki Smith's artist's book, The Fourth Day: Destruction of Birds (1997), features original drawings and was included in the 2003 exhibition Kiki Smith: Prints, Books and Things at The Museum of Modern Art. This artist book is now part of the museum's collection. The most recent catalogue on view is David Hockney's The Yosemite Suite (2016), which contains 29 functional serrated postcards.
