Born in 1979 in Nova Scotia, Canada, Brent Wadden is a Berlin-based artist whose practice blurs the boudaries between craft, interior design, and fine arts. Opposed to Western notions of cheap and immediate means of satisfaction in art, Wadden prefers to take his time to make things himself, rejecting modern society's general state of impatience. He uses hand woven fibres, wool, and cotton to produce geometric and monochromatic grid patterns on canvas that reference the historical constructs of craft and modernism. He constructs paintings by bringing together his hand woven weavings which are made from various natural and synthetic materials, sourced from outlets such as second hand shops and eBay. While he shows a rigorous committment to the grid across all of his work, he also is accepting of natural flaws that occur in the weaving process. He hopes that his works will encourage the viewer to consider the process to create the work, and highten their awareness of processes behind other crafts and handwork.
