Adam Cullen studied Bachelor of Fine Arts at the City Art Institute, Sydney in 1986. He earned a Graduate Diploma of Professional Art Studies the year after. Later in 1999, he received a Master of Fine Arts from University of New South Wales, Sydney. He lived and worked in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia.

Cullen exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia including Let’s Get Lost, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2008) and the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, State Library of New South Wales, Sydney (2011). Cullen was the winner of the 2000 Archibald Prize with portrait of actor David Wenham.
