Adam Cullen studied Bachelor of Fine Arts at the City Art Institute, Sydney in 1986. He earned a Graduate Diploma of Professional Art Studies the year after. Later in 1999, he received a Master of Fine Arts from University of New South Wales, Sydney. He lived and worked in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia.
Amongst other conceptual concerns Cullen remained transfixed by the human condition and his use of dark and sometimes base imagery including demonic clowns, decapitated creatures, outsiders, and the marginalized often prompts a visceral response from his audience.
