Laura Vinci Biography

Laura Vinci is recognised for her oeuvre in sculpture and large-scale installation marked by ongoing study on the connection between body, space and ephemerality, which is also present in her work as artistic director in the theater area. The artist seeks to understand the space as a complex organism that mediates the relationship between bodies and that relies on the constant passage of time. Her projects are typically designed to investigate processes of change or movement, as she seeks to bear witness to the transience of matter in space and invite the public to reconsider the environment surrounding them.

Vinci began her career in the mid-1980s, analyzing the relationships between body and space first through painting and then moving on to the practice of sculpture. The artist begins to include in her poetics the approach on the state changes of matter after her great site-specific intervention known as 'hourglass', proposed for the Arte/Cidade III project (1997) in São Paulo, Brazil. This moment also coincides with the beginning of her participation in the theater, collaborating with scenography and costumes projects in the well-known Teatro Oficina, in São Paulo, Brazil. She is currently a contributor to the mundana companhia, signing the art direction projects.

Laura Vinci was born in São Paulo/SP, Brazil, 1962, where she lives and works. She graduated in Arts Education from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP) in 1987 and completed her master's degree in Fine Arts from Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo (ECA-USP) in 2000. Vinci has been carrying out important site-specific projects in public and private spaces in Brazil and around the world, among which the following stand out: Diurna, Farol Santander, São Paulo, Brazil (2018), Morro Mundo, Espaço Cultural Porto Seguro (ECPS), São Paulo, Brazil (2017); Untitled (from the series Papéis Avulsos), Art Center/South Florida, Miami, USA (2014); Lux and No ar, Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa, Lisbon, Portugal (2010); Clara-Clara, Laneway Commissions, Melbourne, Australia (2006–07); Máquina do Mundo, Palazzo delle Papesse, Siena, Italy (2004); and Estados, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2002).
