In the Nollywood series, Pieter Hugo presents an unsettling series drawn from the overriding character types and storylines used in Nollywood, the astonishingly prolific Nigerian film industry (it produces almost 1000 low-budget films annually) which tends towards tragedy, high drama and eerie symbolism. Nollywood produces movies on its own terms, telling stories that appeal to and reflect the lives of its public: a rare instance of self-representation on such a scale in Africa. Stars are local actors; plots confront the public with familiar situations of romance, comedy, witchcraft, bribery, prostitution. Working with a cast of actors and assistants, Hugo recreates, with added surrealism, the stereotypical myths and symbols he has witnessed firsthand. In 2008 Pieter Hugo was the winner of the KLM Paul Huf Award and the Arles Discovery Award at the Rencontres d’Arles Photography Festival in France. He has exhibited widely worldwide, including at Tate Modern, London (2008), the Fowler Museum, UCLA (2008) and the National Museum of Arts, Rome (2011).
