Hollis Taggart is pleased to present National Association of Women Artists (NAWA): A Tradition Continues, a group exhibition of current artist members of NAWA. The exhibition marks the 135th anniversary year of NAWA; organised in 1889, NAWA is the oldest women artists' collective in the United States and has provided a community for professional women artists, promoting the work of its members through annual exhibitions, traveling shows, awards, and educational and outreach programs. NAWA's membership has included major figures of American art such as Mary Cassatt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Isabel Bishop, Louise Nevelson, Dorothy Dehner, and Faith Ringgold in its ranks.
NAWA's membership currently numbers about 900, with artists working in almost all of the fifty states. From this large pool of artists, the gallery has selected works by fourteen artists from an extensive geographic range, from New York to Florida to Oregon and other states. A wide range of styles is represented, from various forms of abstraction to personal approaches to realism. The artists in the exhibition are: Christine Shannon Aaron, Pennie Brantley, Pamela Flynn, Inness Hancock, Krystal Hart, Hayoon Jay Lee, Flavia Lovatelli, Susan Lorraine Martin, Lola de Miguel, Jennifer Jean Okumura, Sharon Sayegh, Leslie Tejada, Ivy Wu, and Abby Zonies.
NAWA has also been fortunate to have many distinguished contemporary artists act as Honorary Vice Presidents. A section of the exhibition includes work by several of them: Pat Adams, Judith Brodsky, Judy Chicago, Audrey Flack, Faith Ringgold, and Dorothea Rockburne.
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 21 from 6-8pm.
Please note:
_In conjunction with the exhibition at Hollis Taggart, two other NYC galleries will be organising shows concurrently.
