ONE AND J. Gallery is pleased to participate in Condo Shanghai through the invitation of Gallery Vacancy, introducing four Korean artists: Bob Kil, Nikki S. Lee, Suyoung Kim, and Seung Yul Oh. Four artists have studied and practised all over the world, including America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia, literally, in the East and the West. The artists have been showing expansions of their thinking and senses across the world. In specific, they are selected to show visual manners and senses of uncertainty, fluidity, ambiguity and vagueness. We noticed that these features respond to the implicative and ambiguous architectural characteristics of Gallery Vacancy, located in Former French Concession.
Bob Kil's practice centres on the original text work and creation of counterparts in installation and performance. Kil will present new flag works plainly depicting different egg dishes hung within the booth. Eggs are an integral component of different species and may insinuate the beginning of a day or a component of life's beginning. While the interaction of her flags may seem incongruous, the desire to assimilate and interact within the space creates an interesting communication.
Nikki S. Lee's video works Scenes reveal fluid identity in the context of revisiting Part, her earlier work. The videos depict different couples, composed of Lee with anonymous men, making out in various settings—a karaoke bar, in the car, a shower booth and a motel room, etc. The videos emphasise several cases of relationships and its derivation—intimacy, power and definition—making all different identities of Lee. Through Projects, Parts and Layers, Lee successfully transfers her works to videos with delineation narratives.
Suyoung Kim's simple paintings on papers, Untitled—so called 'Plant Drawings'—reveal the relationship of the uncertain senses, while her painting works create narratives that remind us the surface images and textures of the subject buildings. Drawings have only a sensory layer of narrative on the drawings with stripes, colours, and texture.
Seung Yul Oh plays and repeats a variation of collage. The first element of 'Rhythm of mass' (first series) is a collage that was created by tearing and cutting coloured paper. He putted them into a printing process, lithography, and then ripped and tore the printed images. Therefore, the first elements were moving, expanding, and continuing to a new place. The new images that were created organically in the process of disassembling, are removed from the original shape. Each of them will be printed out again using printing resources to be dismantled and aggregated again. Onwards. It's starting to move forward, ongoing works.
