ShanghART M50 is pleased to present a solo exhibition of He Wei that opens on 6 November, 2021. Featuring his most recent paintings, this will be the artist’s first solo show in Shanghai.

Since 2012, experimental abstractions have continued to run through He Wei’s practice, while the new body of work here again reflects his high sensitivity to colour, as well as his random yet accurate judgment in the face of chaos and clarity. Based on the out-of-control qualities of oil paint, such as flowing, penetrating, and superimposing, the artist employs diverse tools and techniques to construct a particular kind of ” confusing certainty” in the seemingly emotive picture.

This “certainty” is not indisputable, but always fleeting. Through repeated explorations, the unique order it created on the canvas has gradually yielded an impressive aesthetic experience for the viewer with imprints of “He Wei”.

Founded in 1996, ShanghART Gallery is one of the first contemporary art galleries established in China.
