Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are pleased to announce a new work by Barbara Kruger, Untitled (Who?) (2020), installed on the facade of the Los Angeles gallery beginning October 15, 2020. This work extends a long and celebrated history of public projects by Kruger across the world, including many in Los Angeles, that pose direct and pressing questions to viewers. In both English and Spanish, Kruger asks for example, in her recognisable bold, black-and-white font: 'Who do you believe?' 'Who do you hate?' '¿Quién es el que amas?' 'Who do you hurt?' In the context of the imminent and divisive 2020 US Presidential Election, the ongoing struggles against systemic racism and a pandemic that has affected millions of Americans and others worldwide, such questions have never been more consequential.
Visible from Wilshire Boulevard in the heart of the Miracle Mile arts district, Untitled (Who?) will remain on view at Sprüth Magers, Los Angeles, through January 15, 2021. The work follows upon Kruger's urgent mural, Untitled (Who is housed when money talks?) (2020), created for the Rental Affordability Act campaign headquarters on Sunset Boulevard last January; as well as her major citywide project, Untitled (Questions) (2020), unveiled during Frieze Week LA 2020, which included installations on street banners and billboards, at Union Station and the Banc of California Stadium, among other locations. In addition, the artist's monumental work of the same name, Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018), is visible on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Los Angeles, through November 2020.
Concurrent with Untitled (Who?), an exhibition of two major installations by Senga Nengudi continues at the Los Angeles gallery through December 2020.
