With Tokyo being the object of so many excellent photographers’ interest over the last 150 odd years, it’s entirely legitimate that the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum should be bringing it home. What’s on display in the first exhibition, displayed on the third floor, is a selection from the museum’s world-class permanent collection, featuring some of the biggest names in art photography, who also happen to have done some of their best work in Tokyo.
The other exhibition on the second floor is the 13th iteration of the Contemporary Japanese Photography group show, which is a regular platform for new talent.

The Simon Lee Gallery was founded by Simon Lee in 2002 in Berkeley Street, Mayfair. The premise of the Simon Lee Gallery has been from the start to re-present the work of established artists of diverse generations from Europe and the USA to a UK audience from an informed perspective and with a fresh and critical eye.
The gallery also promotes younger artists from Europe and the USA whose work defines a new relationship to the conceptual and regularly punctuates its programme with historical exhibitions and curated group shows which enables the gallery to present a lively perspective on contemporary art practice and thought, and to continue a broader dialogue with artists outside of the gallery programme. Within the London context, the Simon Lee Gallery provides a radical platform from which to present artists and their ideas.
Simon Lee Gallery collaborates with museums and other commercial galleries to give its artists exposure outside London. As a direct extension of the London Headquarters, May 2012 saw the inauguration of Simon Lee Gallery in Pedder Building, Hong Kong under the directorship of Katherine Schaefer. Showing leading artists such as Sherrie Levine, Larry Clark and Matias Faldbakken for the first time in Asia, Simon Lee Gallery’s Hong Kong space aims to introduce the gallery artists to a wider public in Hong Kong. Since inception, Simon Lee Gallery in Hong Kong has integrated with the thriving Asian scene of internationally renowned artistic activities, providing a platform in Asia for their conceptual artists as well as younger artists outside of the programme such as Andre Komatsu and Carla Zaccagnini.
Taka Ishii Gallery opened in 1994 with an exhibition program devoted to exploring the conceptual foundations and implications of contemporary (photo) graphic practice. The gallery has since exhibited and published the work of contemporary master Japanese and foreign artists as well as supported the development of younger artists.
In the winter of 2011, the gallery inaugurated Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film, a second exhibition space located in the Roppongi district of Tokyo. With this new exhibition space, the gallery serves as a forum for the presentation of a focused program considering the work of lesser-known pre and post-war Japanese photographers as well as a site for the exhibition of masterworks by historical and contemporary photographic masters from Japan and abroad.
