Hauser & Wirth returns to FOG Design+Art for its third year with a selection of exceptional contemporary and historical works by leading gallery artists, including Rita Ackermann, Louise Bourgeois, Frank Bowling, George Condo, Rashid Johnson, Takesada Matsutani, Pipilotti Rist, Gary Simmons, Lorna Simpson, and Alina Szapocznikow, among others. Focusing on painting and sculpture, the group of works on view showcases each artist's mastery of a chosen medium and illustrates the breadth and caliber of Hauser & Wirth's multi-generational, international program.
Highlights from this year's presentation include outstanding brand-new pieces such as Rita Ackermann's Mama on Desolation Row (2021), a colourful abstraction that continues her ongoing 'Mama' series; Rashid Johnson's Bruise Painting "Brain Damage" (2021), an oil on linen work made during the pandemic; Takesada Matsutani's Point de contact 2021-2 (2021), a three-dimensional multimedia painting from his newest body of work that will be featured in the artist's exhibition at Hauser & Wirth New York this February; and a singular illuminated swimsuit sculpture by Pipilotti Rist, whose acclaimed first West Coast survey is currently on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Los Angeles through 6 June 2022. Other highlights of the stand are Frank Bowling's vibrant painting Landing (2011), and Gary Simmons' On Point (Big Sur) (2007), a painting that exemplifies the artist's signature erasure technique. Simmons' work will be the subject of Remembering Tomorrow, his first exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, opening in Los Angeles 17 February.
Rounding out the gallery's FOG presentation is a curated selection of important historical works by 20th century masters. Among these are Louise Bourgeois' Femme (2005), an abstracted recumbent odalisque sculpture made late in the artist's life, and Lampe-bouche (Illuminated Lips) (1966), an iconic lamp sculpture featuring cast-resin lips by Polish artist Alina Szapocznikow.
