Mazzoleni is pleased to announce its participation at FIAC Paris, 2019. The gallery's fourth presentation at the fair will focus on works by Agostino Bonalumi | Alberto Burri | Jean Dubuffet | Lucio Fontana | Hans Hartung | Georges Mathieu | François Morellet | Nunzio | Serge Poliakoff | Jean-Paul Riopelle | Massimo Vitali | Gianfranco Zappettini
The Mazzoleni display will introduce a selection of works by notable European artists from very diverse decades and backgrounds, with a focus on the interrogation of the surface of the canvas, an object that has been reinvented within the field of painting.
In the central decades of the 20th century (1950s–1970s), different artists from different countries dealt with the starting point of painting, each one analysing a separate aspect. Alberto Burri’s and Lucio Fontana’s works are pivotal in this context: Burri’s Cellotex works on a monochromatic surface, while Fontana’s holes in Concetto Spaziale open new dimensions (also by adding diverse materials on the canvas). Agostino Bonalumi’s extroverted 'black' enhances and mirrors the lesson of Fontana, while the wood and lead work of Nunzio follows Burri’s research of material and combustion.
The field of action for painting can be reorganised even without adding layers or dimensions (for example the 'grids' by François Morellet and Gianfranco Zappettini’s delimitation of the surface in the 'Tele Sovrapposte' series). In the 1950s and 1960s, the valuable group of Tachistes painters gave different solutions to the organisation of colours on the canvas: from the intense gestures of Hans Hartung’s T1962-L2, Georges Mathieu’s Maintenon, to the solid Serge Poliakoff’s Composition Abstraite and a dramatic work, Jeux by Jean-Paul Riopelle.
Mazzoleni presents two exhibitions this autumn: Hans Hartung and Art Informel opened to the public on the 1st of October in London and Hans Hartung, a solo retrospective, which will open to the public on the 25th of October in Turin. The two exhibitions will continue until the 18th of January 2020.
