Bae Yoon Hwan Biography

Bae unfolds social issues and incidents that he has experienced either directly and indirectly; his practice contains scenes which are metaphorically and humorously reconstructed from images of rumours, spooky stories, folk tales, political issues, TV series, news, the Internet, and spam text messages. He illustrates human emotions such as anger, boredom, impatience, oneself’s inner conflicts, and even self-contradictions occurring when a person is enforced to accept certain events due to external pressure or irresistible forces.

Bae’s strength is his unique expression style which reveals vivid and unrefined touches maintaining original traits of materials such as charcoal, oil pastels, acrylics and pens. His depiction possesses not only a rough and bold sensation but an elaborate delicacy, hence his work leaves an intense impression with a dense sense of weight. As an artist who constantly seeks a breakthrough of two dimensional artwork, Bae tried to extend its physical notion by employing outsized canvas recently. Furthermore he has broadened his scope to the field of an animated film which allows him to gain flexibility in usage of medium and also to reduce his craving for new painting.

Gyeongnam Art Museum, and SOMA Museum of Art. In addition, having won the Joongang Finearts Prize in 2014, Bae stands out among contemporary Korean painters.
