丁乙生于上海,1983年从上海市工艺美术学校毕业后,进入玩具厂担任产品设计师。1986年,丁乙进入上海大学美术学院学习国画。正是那段时期,他开始接触西方现代主义,作品呈现出某些早期抽象绘画实验,但直到1988年“十”字图案才正式出现在他的作品中。《十示》系列作为他最早、也最具代表性的“十”字系列,充分体现了经过精准计算、布满整个画布的网格状构图特点。

在社会和政治叙事绘画主导国内画坛的大背景下,丁乙选择“从零重新开始”,运用高度理性的创作手法无疑是非常具有反叛精神的。刻意回避了同时代艺术家营造的“粗粝”画面感,丁乙利用标尺、胶带和颜料管等工具,用一种精准的画面语言实现全新的自我表达。对艺术家来说,画中反复出现的“x”或“+”是无意义的形式符号(当然,从外观上我们可以认为这些符号与“十”、“田”、“大”等汉字颇为近似),也无需观者进行解读。丁乙的多数作品沿用了《十示》这一标题,仅用不同的创作年月以示区别。

多年来,丁乙在油画布、亚麻布、花格布、硬纸板等介质上作画,非常强调手绘,从而与工业制成品区别开来。1991年,长期使用标尺作画加剧了他的腰背疼痛,于是他开始徒手画“十”字。布面丙烯作品《十示(蓝/绿)》(1995)体现了这一转型:画面中的“十”字排布较以前更为松散,视觉效果上更接近于面料上的针脚线迹。

丁乙拒绝具象表达,在他的很多作品中,“十”字图案和颜色共同组成某种抽象意象。以《十示2016-4》(2016)为例,浅色的“十”字组合在深色背景的衬托下,看起来既像电脑芯片,又似浩渺星空。《十示2010-6》(2010)以成品花格织物为画布,交错密织的“十”字共同构成了一幅明丽鲜艳的繁花图景。如今,丁乙的创作转向以椴木为媒介。《十示2017-9》(2017)呈现了数以千计的彩色“十”字图案,共同构成了一个个随机的色彩群组。

丁乙是当代中国最具影响力的艺术家之一,作品在中国国内和国际均被广泛收藏。目前,丁乙在上海工作、生活。
