Press Release

The Pea Stakers is an exhibition in two parts. In the actual gallery, a new series of pastel drawings takes its content from the Netflix series Emily in Paris, Season 1. Freshly transplanted to a strange city, the young social media manager jogs along the Seine while communicating on her iPhone. Pastel is a medium associated with nineteenth-century Impressionism, specifically Edgar Degas and the images of young dancers (‘petits rats’) he was endlessly reworking. Meanwhile, in a VR simulation of the gallery, viewers encounter a short text based on a dream about writing.

The Pea Stakers (a title taken from a work by Camille Pissarro, a design for a painting on a fan) is John Kelsey‘s third exhibition at Galerie Buchholz.
