Hong Kong's M+ museum and the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong have tapped Trevor Yeung to represent Hong Kong at the 60th Venice Biennale from 20 April to 24 November 2024.
'I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to unveil a new body of work at the La Biennale di Venezia—to represent Hong Kong, my hometown, at one of the most prestigious contemporary art exhibitions in the world,' Yeung said in a statement.
Yeung was born in 1988 in Dongguan, mainland China, but grew up in Hong Kong. He graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2010, and is represented by Blindspot Gallery. Yeung exhibited at both the Singapore Biennale and the Kathmandu Triennale in 2022. He is also a nominee for the 2023 Sigg Prize.
Doryun Chong, Deputy Director, Curatorial, and Chief Curator at M+, said, 'Trevor Yeung's examination of everyday, evanescent existences and sustained human relationships with nature are expressed through imaginative and lyrical installations evoking poignant senses of tenderness and fragility, and resonate deeply with his audiences.'
Yeung's solo exhibition, a collateral event at the Biennale, will be curated by Olivia Chow, Assistant Curator, Visual Art, at M+.
'Building on my experience in curating the 58th edition of the Hong Kong collateral event featuring artist Shirley Tse in 2019, I am excited to curate and collaborate with Trevor Yeung, an artist whose unwavering and intricate installation practice I have closely followed since the early days,' she said.
At the last Venice Biennale, Hong Kong presented works by Angela Su, which are currently on show at M+ through 8 October. Similarly, Yeung's presentation at Venice will travel to the museum in 2025 after showing in Venice.
