About Venice Biennale

Venice’s Biennale, or La Biennale di Venezia, is arguably the largest and most important contemporary art event. It is commonly described as ‘the Olympics of the art world’. Held biennially, the Biennale Arte holds a prominent place in the global art community, shaping discourse in the contemporary art world.

Established by the Venetian City Council as a national art exhibition in 1895, the Biennale Arte exhibition has evolved significantly, becoming a cornerstone of the global arts scene. Alongside the Central Pavilion, the event now includes 30 permanent national pavilions, each dedicated to showcasing innovative works by representative artists or collectives from various countries. For nations without permanent exhibition venues, temporary spaces throughout Venice accommodate their exhibitions. These, along with numerous collateral events and shows, enrich the city’s cultural tapestry during the Biennale, making it a vibrant global fair.

Today, the Biennale Arte attracts artists, critics, and enthusiasts to the floating city. Featuring a diverse array of artistic mediums, including painting, sculpture, film, and performance, the Biennale serves as a vibrant platform for cultural exchange and dialogue.

With each edition centred on a thematic focus, the Biennale Arte prompts participating artists to explore and interpret pressing social, political, and cultural issues. This exploration fosters a dynamic display of ideas and perspectives, enriching the contemporary art landscape.

Beyond its exhibitions, the Biennale Arte offers many opportunities for participants interested in networking, collaboration, and education. Symposiums, lectures, and educational workshop activities complement the main event, fostering intellectual discourse and group collaboration among artists and audiences. Visitors can also enjoy guided tours through the curated artworks in each pavilion, increasing their understanding of the artists and institutions involved.
