Hauser & Wirth's booth at Art Basel Hong Kong this year reveals exceptional works by historical masters Louise Bourgeois, Frank Bowling, Ed Clark, Philip Guston and Maria Lassnig, alongside leading contemporary voices, such as George Condo, Roni Horn, Rashid Johnson, Nicolas Party and Avery Singer, while introducing several acclaimed artists who have joined the gallery in recent months, including Hélène Delprat and Catherine Goodman.
Glenn Ligon's first exhibition in Greater China
The fair presentation complements Glenn Ligon's exhibition at the gallery's new street-level space on 8 Queen's Road Central, showcasing his longest running Stranger series, alongside new bodies of works, Static paintings and works on Kozo paper.
Booth Highlights:
Two major highlights are 'Untitled (The Wedges)' (1950), a key work from Louise Bourgeois's landmark Personages series, the artist's initial foray into three-dimensional sculpture that heralded a new chapter of unprecedented artistic expression within Bourgeois's oeuvre, and 'The Desire' (1978) Philip Guston's late painting, which exemplifies the artist's renowned figurative period reflecting his intense inner turmoil through use of symbols.
Following her inaugural exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Paris, Hélène Delprat will have her Asia debut since joining the gallery in 2023. In her new work 'BANG!' (2023), Delprat's elusive characters and objects eschew context, resisting a single organized narrative. 'The Sweet Sound of Silence' (2023) is representative of Catherine Goodman's signature expressionistic style, where gestures, colours and imagery respond intuitively to memory, place and the mystery of the unconscious.
Following a recent special presentation of two monumental works at Hauser & Wirth London to celebrate the 90th birthday of Sir Frank Bowling OBE RA, 'Forose' (2006) will be on view at the fair. Created during a pivotal moment in Bowling's extraordinary career, the work exemplifies the artist's radically innovative style – combining the luminous colours of his 'map paintings' from the 1960s, the atmospheric marbling and drips from his radical 'poured paintings' from the 1970s, and the heavily textured surfaces of his work from the 1980s.
Contemporary highlights also include brand-new large-scale canvases by Avery Singer, 'Poppers' (2024) and Zhang Enli's 'Composer' (2024), alongside Rashid Johnson's work from his latest God Painting series, 'God Painting "Open Waters"' (2023), in which the abstract marks take the audience on his spiritual or psychological journey.
