Martin Browne Contemporary is pleased to present Imaginary Friends and Black Portraits, an exhibition of new paintings by McLean Edwards that showcase Edwards’s singular interpretations of contemporary portraiture. Edwards articulates the eccentricities and foibles of the human condition in paintings that are revealing and often autobiographical. Honest and unflinching, Edwards lays himself bare in many of his works. He invites (and at time provokes) the viewer to enter into the worlds depicted in his paintings. These worlds are a collision of the personal and the fictional, the familiar and the estranged. As a cheeky and at times controversial guide, Edwards introduces us to his ever expanding cast of characters - childhood icons, artists, friends and enemies are among those invited to share the stage.
McLean Edwards was selected as a finalist in the 2013 Archibald Prize for his portrait of Glenn Barkley, curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art. This work is currently on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
