Steven Claydon was born in 1969 in London; he lives and works in Cornwall.
Claydon studied for his MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins School, London; and his BA in Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art & Design, London.
Claydon works across sculpture, installation and assemblage. Decontextualisation is characteristic of Claydon’s works: he repositions objects to liquefy their meaning, allowing allusions and associations to work their way in, whether anthropologic, mythic, or primordial.
His solo shows include: The Fictional Pixel and The Ancient Set, NO.5, Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen (2015); Analogues, Methods, Monsters, Machines, Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva (2015); Culpable Earth, Firstsite, Colchester (2012).
His group shows include: BCB British Ceramics Biennial, Stoke on Trent, UK (2021); INVISIBLE, Science Gallery, Dublin, IRL (2020); Vegetables & Death, Troy Town Art Pottery, London, UK (2019); E dimmi che non vuoi morire: il mito di Niobe, Santuario di Ercole Vincitore, Tivoli, I (2018); The Policeman’s Beard Is Half Constructed Kunst Im Zeitalter Künstlicher Intelligenz, Bonner Kunstverein and Artothek, Bonn (2017); Hepworth Sculpture Prize, Hepworth Wakefield, Wakefield (2016); The Noing Uv It, curated by Martin Clark and Steven Claydon, Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen (2015); Period Room, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2014); One Torino, Palazzo Cavour, Turin (2013); Assembly: A Survey of Recent Artists’ Film and Video in Britain 2008–2013, Tate Britain, London (2013); Aquatopia, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham/ Tate St Ives, St Ives (2013).
