Cheng Ran, born in 1981 in Mongolia, China, is a representative of China’s new generation of video and cross-media artists. His works reflect on the existential state of the Chinese young generation under the impact of political and cultural globalization. Cheng Ran’s works have been featured in numerous biennials, group exhibitions, and film festivals around the world. He has had solo exhibitions in various prestigious institutions. Cheng Ran has received several awards and his works are part of prominent collections worldwide.

About the Artist

Cheng’s oeuvre mostly consists of video and film, as well as photography and installation works. His video works are praised for its eclectic form in which films are integrated into the poetic culture of contemporary age. His works convey a young perspective on the unsolvable issues in life, such as problems regarding identity, and life and death, and the anguish felt by young Chinese people living through the globalized Chinese culture and cultural policy. They integrate elements of the performative, the visual from electronica and rock’n’roll music, and in a few cases, the aesthetics of Chinese ink painting into his cinematic language that is informed by late 20th century cinema.

Founded in 2010 by cultural entrepreneur Adrian Cheng, K11 Art Foundation (KAF) is a non-profit organisation based in Hong Kong, Named after his K11 art-mall projects, the foundation was created to support the development of Chinese contemporary art from Greater China and has since expanded to champion emerging artists from across Asia on an international stage.
