Since first opening its doors to the public in Chengdu in 2007, A Thousand Plateaus Art Space has consistently presented an innovative and dynamic programme dedicated to forming paths of communication between the artists it represents and high calibre museums, collectors, and the public.
Read MoreA Thousand Plateaus Art Space is based in the High-tech Development Zone of Chengdu. There, across a screening room and multiple exhibition halls that form more than 1000 square metres of exhibition space, the gallery supports the growth of contemporary Chinese art and culture through local and international projects including exhibitions, panels, publications, and art fairs.
A Thousand Plateaus Art Space Artists
The artists of A Thousand Plateaus Art Space are both emerging and established—with the oldest born in the 1940s and the youngest in the 1990s—and approach their practices from a range of perspectives and backgrounds. While the roster predominantly features Chinese artists, international artists—including French artists Bernard Pourrière and Catherine Melin—are also represented.
The artists on the roster of A Thousand Plateaus Art Space are diverse in their interests. For example, Feng Bingyi’s dynamic practice investigates the relationship between text and image, while aaajiao focuses on cybermedia youth culture in China. Collaborative duo Chen Jianjun+Cao Minghao, on the other hand, involve themselves in an extended exploration of art as a social tool.
As well as being diverse in their ages, backgrounds, and interests, the media with which the artists of A Thousand Plateaus Art Space express these unique perspectives are equally diverse. Painting is a popular medium for the artists and is used to a range of ends, from Xiong Yu’s cartoon-like figurative narratives to Yang Mian’s dot-based abstractions, Wang Chuan’s abstract ink paintings, and Liu Chuanhong’s eerie landscapes and map paintings.
Outside of this rich variety of painting practices, the artists of A Thousand Plateaus Art Space also work in other media, such as sculpture (Zhang Ruyi); performance art (Tong Wenmin); mixed media installation (He Gong); video (Li Yifan); and photography, both black and white (Li Lang) and colour (Feng Li); to name a few.
A Thousand Plateaus Art Space Exhibitions and Art Fairs
A Thousand Plateaus Art Space disseminates the practices of the artists on its roster through exhibitions and other activities, including art education and curatorial initiatives. The gallery also offers collection management consulting services and participates in a range of art fairs each year, such as Art Basel in Hong Kong; West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai; ART STAGE Singapore; ASIA NOW, Paris; ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair; and Liste Art Fair Basel.
