Celebrating 20 years of Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel, we are delighted to return to Basel with a presentation that gives global resonance to the lexicon of Brazilian art history. To reflect on this artistic production today is to reaffirm the power of a broad and plural cultural environment, marked by contrasts and gestures of an undisciplined art in the face of the canons of a hegemonic art history.
As a starting point, we take two important mid-twentieth century neoconcrete works by Lygia Pape. We then move into the 1970s through the pictorial and conceptual 'Envolvimento' series by Wanda Pimentel. Jac Leirner's Evidence of Crime carries both the beauty and the critical power of the objectual requalifications that have been at the centre of her operations since the 1980s. Valeska Soares' and Erika Verzutti's thought-provoking works guide us through the sculptural gesture into the field of expanded painting. Adriana Varejão adds an irrefutable presence with her precise pictorial vocabulary whilst landscape is investigated and deconstructed through the works of Lucia Laguna, Marina Rheingantz and Janaina Tschape.
Representations of constructed space, be it architectural or psychological may be seen in Mauro Restiffe's intimate gaze or Rivane Neueunschwander's somber interiors. Materiality is amplified in Yuli Yamagata's repertoire of delusions and desires. Finally, we are thrown into the nature of spiritual beliefs and cultural practices through Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe's drawings and Ernesto Neto's weaved structures.
