Márcia Falcão Biography

Márcia Falcão places particular emphasis on the medium of painting, using bold brushstrokes and dense layers of color to explore issues surrounding the female body. The artists work is rooted in her own biography as a woman born on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, a place shaped by a landscape that is both unsettlingly beautiful and marked by violence. Alongside these personal references, she reinterprets iconographic motifs from art history, consistently developing figurative scenes that challenge stereotypes and establish a dialogue between historical symbols and the everyday reality of urban life.

Most recently Márcia Falcão participated in the 36th São Paulo Biennial (2025). Further solo exhibitions include Monuments of Flesh, Night Gallery, Los Angeles (2024); Pai Contra Mãe, Instituto Inclusartiz, Rio de Janeiro (2023); Márcia Falcão, Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel, São Paulo (2022); Márcia Falcão, Carpintaria, Rio de Janeiro (2021); and Para Além do corpo: nudez semântica, Galeria Aymoré, Rio de Janeiro (2020). Recent international group exhibitions include Mirrors of the Mind: Figuration in the Jorge M. Pérez Collection, Miami (2024, Funk! Um grito de ousadia e liberdade, Museu de Arte do Rio (2023) and her participation at the New York Latin American Art Triennial, New York (2022).
