Galerie Tanit Munich is thrilled to present Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen
A posthumous solo exhibition by Bodo Buhl (1951–2010)
Curated by Dr. Ulrich Wilmes.
Galerie Tanit is delighted to present works from Bodo Buhl’s estate. The exhibition focuses on three main areas of his work: from the sculptures of the 1980s to the photographic works of the 1990s and the drawings of the 2000s.
Together with other like-minded people, Bodo Buhl sought a “Munich awakening” at the end of the 1970s. He belonged to a generation of sculptors who significantly shaped the art of the following decade.
The range of Bodo Buhl’s historical references encompasses the periods of classical modernism and the post-war era, in which he grew up and whose aesthetics left a lasting impression on him. Specifically, he developed his pictorial approaches against the backdrop of minimalism and pop art as the lasting movements of contemporary art in the 1960s and 1970s.
Buhl’s sculptures, photographs and drawings unite an individual visual language that stems from a decidedly anti-expressive attitude that rejects any subjective signature. The specific functions of form and colour, surface structure and spatial effect ultimately merge into arrangements that work with illusion and ironic distance. Buhl used these qualities to create a work that flaunts its irritating presence and beauty without concealing its true character as a surrogate.
