GILES ALEXANDER

Giles Alexander’s work draws from both religion and science. While these two cornerstones are often regarded as polar opposites, Alexander prefers to treat them as flip-sides of the same coin. A diverse range of art history and digital media are appropriated in Giles’s work as he superimposes, manipulates, distorts, collapses and simulates data to find ways of reinventing the traditional and the handmade.

In a fluid and dynamic body of work on floating aluminum canvases, Alexander deftly laces his paintings with diverse images drawn from human belief systems, contrasting mythical deities with their contemporary counterparts. Meanwhile, Our Father is a Red Giant explores the origins of the solar system in a compelling, pulsating close-up image of the sun.

Giles Alexander was selected as a finalist in the 2013 Archibald and Sulman Prizes.
