Lee Chihsiang Biography

Delving into photorealism, Taiwanese artist Lee ChiHsiang (b. 1983) utilizes stained glass as a conceptual lens within reality through the modality of oil painting. The artist captures the subtleness of obscure objects behind windows, rendering them in a manner that is both poetic and evanescent, and further reconsider the relationship between the viewer and what lies beyond the window.

Stained glass, commonly found in Taiwanese buildings and households, features intricate patterns designed to prevent direct views from the outside while not entirely obscuring the interior view. It simultaneously serves decorative and light-diffusing purposes. To capture the tactile texture of embossed glass, the artist intentionally introduces subtle tremors and instabilities into his paintings, creating details that differ from what’s captured by digital camera lenses. The blurred scenes, which provide more room for viewers’ imagination, thereby become a pivotal aspect of the artist’s visual language.
