Who are the people under 40 making waves in the art world? That was the question we asked ourselves in 2014, when we launched the first Apollo 40 Under 40. That year’s list, which focused on Europe, and the subsequent 40 Under 40 USA, weren’t meant as power lists but as surveys of talent: of young people who have firmly established their credentials in this sector and whom we fully expect will be inspiring us with their innovations, ideas and achievements for decades to come.
This year the Apollo 40 Under 40 turns to the Asia Pacific region, and will once again feature 40 individuals selected from the hundreds of nominations we received from across the world. As in previous years, a distinguished panel of judges will choose ten individuals in each of four categories: Artists, Collectors, Business, and Thinkers.
Through collecting, preserving, and making information on the recent history of contemporary art in Asia easily accessible, AAA aims to facilitate understanding, research, and writing in the field and challenge existing global narratives. AAA is a proactive platform, instigating critical thinking and dialogue, bringing people together, and organising diverse public, educational, and residential programmes for a wide range of audiences. At the core of its mission is AAA's commitment to create a collection belonging to the public, a collection that exists not in an enclosed space, but in a space that is open and productive, generating new ideas and works that continually reshape the Archive itself.
Asia Art Archive is a young and dynamic organisation initiated in 2000 as a direct response to the increasing number of Asian contemporary art exhibitions and events world wide. Based in Hong Kong, AAA, a non-profit organisation and registered charity, is dedicated to documenting the recent history of visual art from the region within an international context. Its first Executive Director, Claire Hsu, founded the Asia Art Archive in collaboration with Chang Tsong-zung and Ronald Arculli. The current chair of the board is Jane DeBevoise.
The first art education centre and library of its kind, AAA boasts one of the most comprehensive collections of primary and secondary source material on contemporary Asian art in the world, with over 32,000 titles accessible to the public, free of charge, via its physical 4,000-square-foot space and searchable from its website.
From its inception, AAA has acknowledged its position in the field as more than a static collection of material waiting to be discovered. Through the regular initiation of educational and public programs by the Research+ Department, AAA endeavours to be pro-active in instigating dialogue and critical thinking, and in introducing as wide an audience as possible to this rich resource through its education program.
Kukje Gallery has been a pivotal cultural hub in Seoul, Korea since its inception in 1982. Kukje Gallery is located in the heart of Samcheong-dong, a historically and culturally significant district. The gallery boasts three unique buildings, each titled according to its age: K1, K2, and K3. K2 opened in 2007 to celebrate the gallery’s 25th anniversary, and K3 opened in 2012 to commemorate its 30th anniversary.
Committed to showcasing both international and Korean artists, Kukje is widely celebrated for its diverse and ambitious programming. Specializing in modern and contemporary art, Kukje is often the first venue in Korea to present prominent artists, and major exhibitions have been staged to introduce leading international artists such as Anthony Caro, Anselm Kiefer, Alexander Calder, Louise Bourgeois, Donald Judd, Anish Kapoor, Bill Viola, Roni Horn, Candida Höfer, Julian Opie, Paul McCarthy, Jenny Holzer, Eva Hesse and Jean-Michel Othoniel.
In conjunction with its focus on international artists, Kukje is committed to promoting Korean artists abroad, introducing artists such as Haegue Yang, Kimsooja, Gimhongsok, Kyungah Ham, Yeondoo Jung, Sora Kim and Jae-Eun Choi at major art fairs around the world. Just as importantly, Kukje has made a strong commitment to post-war Korean artists including Ha Chong-Hyun, Lee Ufan, Chung Chang-Sup, Kwon Young-Woo, Park Seo-Bo, and Chung Sang-Hwa. In particular, Kukje has played a critical role in introducing Korean artists to important collectors, museums and cultural venues around the world, and many Korean artists supported by Kukje Gallery have exhibited in international biennials and major museum exhibitions.
These projects along with the gallery’s ambitious and scholarly exhibition catalogues and ongoing lecture series are what make Kukje a significant contributor in shaping Korea’s cultural landscape. Building on its unmatched reputation, Kukje continues to play a key role in developing the domestic art market as well as providing an important venue for introducing international trends.
The mission of the museum, as stated in 2005, is to "focus on 20th and 21st century visual culture, broadly defined, from a Hong Kong perspective and with a global vision. With an open, flexible and forward-looking attitude, M+ aims to inspire, delight, educate and engage the public, to explore diversity and foster creativity."
The inaugural director, Lars Nittve has explained that the name is simply drawn from the concept of "museum and more". The team currently, without a building, has sought to move beyond the typical model of the art museum, for example by serving as a showcase of diverse subjects like architecture, film and all manner of moving images including animation and video games.
The holdings of the museum comprise a variety of types of media, including "sketches, electronic media, installation, objects, painting, photography, architectural models, printed matter, sculpture and time-based intangibles".
On 12 June 2012 Uli Sigg, a Swiss collector of reportedly the largest and most comprehensive collection of contemporary Chinese art in the world, announced that he would donate the majority of his holdings to M+. This founding acquisition includes 1,463 donated works by 325 artists, "conservatively valued" at $1.3 billion Hong Kong dollars. In addition to this there was a purchase from Sigg of a further 47 works for $177 million. From opening in 2019 until 2021, the M+ Sigg collection will be presented "in isolation", and afterward displayed as part of the overall holdings.
Construction of the building began in 2014. The design was won by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and Hong Kong-based TFP Farrells. The 60,000 square-meter museum, scheduled for opening in 2019, is located in the West Kowloon Cultural District. This is a new area, currently under development on Hong Kong’s waterfront, that will include museums, theaters, exhibition venues and a 14-hectare public park. M+ is presently administered by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, a statutory agency of the Hong Kong government. A separate subsidiary company will be set up in the future with the aim of ensuring its "independence and efficiency".
Para Site is Hong Kong's leading contemporary art centre and one of the oldest and most active independent art institutions in Asia. It produces exhibitions, publications, discursive, and educational projects aimed at forging a critical understanding of local and international phenomena in art and society.
Founded in early 1996 as an artist run space, Para Site was Hong Kong's first exhibition-making institution of contemporary art and a crucial self-organised structure within the city’s civil society, during the uncertain period preceding its handover to Mainland China. Throughout the years, Para Site has grown into a contemporary art centre, engaged in a wide array of activities and collaborations with other art institutions, museums, and academic structures in Hong Kong and the international landscape. In early 2015, Para Site moved to greatly increased premises, in North Point/Quarry Bay. Throughout its history, Para Site's activities have included a range of different formats, among which P/S magazine (1997-2006), a bilingual publication, which was Hong Kong's first visual arts magazine and a central platform for the development of art writing and of a discursive scene in the city and the Curatorial Training Programme (2007-2010). Since 2012, Para Site has been running an International Art Residency Programme and has been organizing an annual international conference. This is accompanied, starting from 2015, by a new educational format aimed at training young curators and other art professionals. Para Site's activities are made possible by the generous support of its patrons, and grants from foundations and the Government of the HKSAR.
The Simon Lee Gallery was founded by Simon Lee in 2002 in Berkeley Street, Mayfair. The premise of the Simon Lee Gallery has been from the start to re-present the work of established artists of diverse generations from Europe and the USA to a UK audience from an informed perspective and with a fresh and critical eye.
The gallery also promotes younger artists from Europe and the USA whose work defines a new relationship to the conceptual and regularly punctuates its programme with historical exhibitions and curated group shows which enables the gallery to present a lively perspective on contemporary art practice and thought, and to continue a broader dialogue with artists outside of the gallery programme. Within the London context, the Simon Lee Gallery provides a radical platform from which to present artists and their ideas.
Simon Lee Gallery collaborates with museums and other commercial galleries to give its artists exposure outside London. It also publishes catalogues and artist monographs endeavouring to provide a precise and rigorous context in which its artists can be viewed. In conjunction with the gallery’s emphasis on providing a point of public access to the work of many artists, the gallery also regularly hosts and invites educational groups from museums, art schools and universities from both the UK and abroad.
As a direct extension of the London Headquarters, May 2012 saw the inauguration of Simon Lee Gallery in Pedder Building, Hong Kong under the directorship of Katherine Schaefer. Showing leading artists such as Sherrie Levine, Larry Clark and Matias Faldbakken for the first time in Asia, Simon Lee Gallery’s Hong Kong space aims to introduce the gallery artists to a wider public in Hong Kong. Since inception, Simon Lee Gallery in Hong Kong has integrated with the thriving Asian scene of internationally renowned artistic activities, providing a platform in Asia for their conceptual artists as well as younger artists outside of the programme such as Andre Komatsu and Carla Zaccagnini.
UCCA’s exhibition program is the most active in China, and among the most ambitious anywhere in the world. Most exhibitions at UCCA seek to make the scope of a particular artist’s vision clear to a largely Chinese audience that may be encountering it for the first time, whether the artist is an internationally recognized figure or an emerging local talent. From time to time, UCCA also organizes group surveys and archival exhibitions, which explore artistic trends, histories, and generations. Exhibitions of different sizes overlap, allowing a visitor to discover several different things at the same time. They follow on each other, building a narrative about contemporary art and culture for a global Beijing context.

Through its more than 500 annual programs—including art talks, exchanges, film screenings, performances, workshops, and public festivals—UCCA creates a creative platform for cultural interaction, which in turn allows its public to explore possibilities in different social fields. UCCASTORE maintains China's leading program of limited editions, having collaborated with more than forty artists to produce specially commissioned works. It also showcases the work of cutting-edge designers, offering a wide range of original products found nowhere else. All UCCASTORE proceeds support the Center’s programs and operations.
