Whitney Museum Reveals 63 Artists and Collectives for 2022 Biennial

The Whitney Museum of American Art has announced the artists participating in the museum's 80th biennial, which opens to members from 31 March and to the public from 6 April.

Whitney Biennial 2022: Quiet as It's Kept is being curated by the museum's Director of Curatorial Initiatives David Breslin and Director of Curatorial Affairs Adrienne Edwards with support from Gabriel Almeida Baroja and Margaret Kross.

Initially scheduled to open in 2021, the curators began working on the exhibition almost a year before the 2020 US presidential election.

Breslin described the biennial as 'a way to bring time alive' and 'really get under the skin of what a moment was like.'

In selecting works for the show, Edwards said she asked, 'does it have the capacity to speak to [the] social, political, economic, personal? Can it do that in a way that's convincing? That's a question that's suspended throughout the show.'

Participating artists include Rick Lowe, whose practice has included reinvigorating impoverished Black neighbourhoods, and painter Cy Gavin, whose brightly coloured figurative works are often concerned with the legacy of colonialism and slavery.
