NOBUYOSHI ARAKI, TAKUMA NAKAHIRA

Following up on the Okinawa reversion 50 years in 2022, Each Modern is pleased to present “OKINAWA－Araki Nobuyoshi・Nakahira Takuma” in January 2023. Showcases Japanese photographers Araki Nobuyoshi and Nakahira Takuma’s series of works that were separately photographed at different times on different islands of Southern Japan. The exhibition gathers Araki’s Sentimental Journey II: Okinawa, 1971, the series taken in the U.S.-Occupied Okinawa, a year before the reversion to Japan, and Nakahira’s color photographs taken in Okinawa, 30 years after and more, in his late period during 2002-2011 as well as Nakahira’s Tokara Islets, 1976 which photographed as the southern cultural limit of Japan. These works would bring the light to the borders of various natures, visible and invisible borders between the different historical backgrounds and cultures of Okinawa and Japan. Meanwhile, the exhibition article — written by the photographer and critic Sean Wang — will provide insights into the style-changing and visual thinking of Araki and Nakahira, and how Okinawa be seen through their lenses.
