Experimenter presents ٹورک| करवट| Karvat, U.S. based Bhasha Chakrabarti’s first solo at Experimenter –Colaba, Mumbai and her second solo at the gallery. Taking Ismat Chughtai’s ‘Lihaaf’ as a starting point, the works in the exhibition explore the connected notions of ajeeb (strangeness) and ajaib (wonderous) within the domestic and of the domestic itself as wondrous.
I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night and, I started feeling a strange fear. There was stifling darkness in the room and in that darkness, Begum Jaan’s quilt was rocking back and forth as if an elephant was trapped inside it...By morning, I completely forgot the terrifying scenes of the night. Besides, the quilt looked completely innocent in the morning.
Bhasha Chakrabarti is interested in exploring how artwork, even when grounded in local materials and symbols, can speak to issues beyond the local by situating her practice within global conversations around race, gender, and power.
