Gallery Baton is delighted to announce Jinnie Seo (b.1963 in Seoul)'s project in Insights (Booth 3D26) at Art Basel Hong Kong 2019. Seo creates an encompassing and poetic experience of a borderless and timeless space through her solo exhibition, titled Spellbound—Enfold/Unfold.
Jinnie Seo's site-specific projects cross borders between drawing/painting and sculpture/installation, and construct experiential spaces that are interwoven with personal memories and the commonality of human experiences. Aesthetics of the past and the present as well as the usage of disparate materials and methods are employed to heighten an understanding of time and space.
For Insights, Seo presents an installation of a series of cut-copper plates which enfold and unfold through the rhythmic interplay of hand gestures, creating a series of visual lexicons. These gestures form a highly personalised ritual, unfurling intimate stories from her memories of growing up in Korean traditional house. Oscillating between stillness and motion, the work's spatial and temporal layering is influenced by her relationship with time. Oxidation of the copper surface occurring over a period of time which changes the shimmering luminosity of copper builds the spatial and temporal layering which adds complex depth to the work.
Reminiscent of her childhood plays of watching the transient clouds, making shadows on a screen door, and cutting out amorphous shapes from leftover silk fabrics, Seo's installation creates a dreamlike intimate landscape which captures fleeting moments and the ephemeral shadows of memories.
