South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa’s first solopresentation in London titled Heart of the garden exploresthe multiplicity of place and identity. This new body of workreflects on the lingering effects of Apartheid with referenceto his family history and his ancestral home in South Africa’sEastern Cape.
This story behind this body of work was motivated by anearlier project, ‘I carry Her photo with Me’, which is about thedisappearance of my sister Ziyanda. As part of that project,I traced her footprints back to the Eastern Cape, exploringher earlier life in Tsomo and the surrounding area. Throughthis process I was able to reconnect with family and uncovera wider sense of my identity. However, I realised that thiswas also a place that I know very little about. - LindokuhleSobekwa, 2024
The presentation includes work from Sobekwa’s seriesEzilalini (The country) which offers a reflection on the divisionbetween the rural and urban areas structured by Apartheidspatial planning; a deliberate system that still affects familystructures and economic access today. This division isrepresented through his photographic journey from hisbirthplace Katlehong - a large township in the south-east ofJohannesburg - to where his grandmother lives in Tsomo inSouth Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. The work unpacks thecomplex sense of spiritual longing and desire to reconcilepsychogeographic dislocation that comes from being in aplace where one exists out of forced familial fragmentationand systemic dispossession.
