P21 is pleased to present Yoon Hyangro’s (b.1986) first solo exhibition with the gallery. Under the title Surflatpictor, the exhibition features Yoon’s new paintings and a site-specific installation from her ongoing series, Screenshot.
Yoon’s practice centers around digitally processing found images from popular media such as comics and animations to bring the deconstructed or reorganized images onto canvas, resulting in ‘pseudo-paintings’ as she calls them. For this exhibition, Yoon attempts to materialize her work process of Screenshot within the gallery space, where she creates image variations by playing with the image editing program, physical space and properties of different media during her investigation of the flatness of a surface.
Yoon Hyangro (b.1986) received her BFA in painting from Hongik University and MFA in Fine Arts from Korea National University of Arts. She recently finished her residency at DOOSAN Gallery New York, followed by a solo exhibition, Liquid Rescale in 2017. Previously, she participated in exhibitions at leading institutions including Seoul Museum of Art (2018, Seoul), Atelier Hermes (2017, Seoul), Digital Art Center of Taipei (2016, Taipei), Arko Art Center (2015, Seoul), Ilmin Museum of Art (2015, Seoul), and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2015, Seoul). Yoon will participate in 2018 Gwangju Biennale.
Yoon Hyangro’s ‘pseudo-paintings’, as the artist describes them, explore the ways in which images are made, remade, and re-perceived by transferring digitally manipulated images onto the canvas.
P21 was established in 2017 by Soo Choi. Located in Itaewon district, a cultural hub in Seoul, the gallery opened with an inaugural exhibition by Choi Jeong Hwa and continues to promote compelling and original examples of international contemporary art. P21 is known for its unique exhibition space with two separate facades, respectively named P1 and P2, that enable artists to create site-specific works.
